This course is designed to provide students an informed understanding of contemporary South Korean politics snd society, including its modern historical origins. The course reviews recent socio-political changes in South Korea, starting with the liberation and Korean War era of the 1940s and 1950s, South Korea's economic development in the 1960s and 1970s, democratisation in the 1980s, globalisation and neoliberal reforms since the 1990s, and the recent rapid developments in culture and post-industrial economy. Success with the assignments and assessments depends on steady engagement with the readings and viewings, as well as on active participation in classroom discussion.
