This course focuses on extending digital making through an iterative process of experimentation and productive failure to develop novel solutions attuned to specific cultural, technical and conceptual constraints. Beyond introductory competency with single processes, the course is concerned with how digital and analogue processes of making can be combined and adapted for practical, creative and critical outcomes. Students develop the versatile skills and knowledge needed to navigate an ever-evolving field of digital and material fabrication.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. design and execute extended making processes that combine and adapt digital and analogue methods;
  2. apply iterative experimentation, testing and productive failure to the development of resolved outcomes;
  3. exercise independent judgement in selecting, adapting and refining processes appropriate to an extended project and its constraints; and
  4. critically position their own practice, through peer seminar discussion, within contemporary discourse on digital and material fabrication.

Other Information

This course requires you to be inducted into the ANU MakerSpace facilities in order to access specialist equipment. https://makerspace.anu.edu.au/ Specified university computer labs will provide access to essential software. You are required to open an account with AutoDesk for a free student subscription to Fusion360. While not required it is highly recommended to have a personal laptop and mouse to complete the digital fabrication tasks.
