This course focuses on extending digital making through an iterative process of experimentation and productive failure to develop novel solutions attuned to specific cultural, technical and conceptual constraints. Beyond introductory competency with single processes, the course is concerned with how digital and analogue processes of making can be combined and adapted for practical, creative and critical outcomes. Students develop the versatile skills and knowledge needed to navigate an ever-evolving field of digital and material fabrication.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. design and execute sustained programs of making that combine and adapt digital and analogue methods;
  2. generate, test and critically evaluate approaches to form and process through systematic iteration and experimentation;
  3. exercise autonomy and expert judgement in scoping, planning and realising an extended project and its constraints; and
  4. critically position their own practice within contemporary discourse on digital and material fabrication, and communicate that position to specialist and non-specialist audiences through peer seminar discussion and documentation.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Technical studies and process experiments (20) [LO 1,2]
  2. Project proposal and seminar presentationExample format: Document and accompanying presentation of ~1500-1750 words. (15) [LO 3,4]
  3. Major projectExample format: Final physical works, digital files, formative drafts and process works. (45) [LO 1,2,3]
  4. Critical documentation and contextual reviewExample format: Illustrated A4 document of ~1750-2000 words (approximately 8-12 A4 pages). (20) [LO 3,4]
