As a PhD candidate you will work with increased independence, under the direction of a supervisory panel of experts in the field. Your research will make an original and important contribution to human knowledge, research and development.
Research School of Biology has over 60 Group Leaders offering HDR projects in areas covering a wide range of biology, and our graduates hold important positions in academia, industry and government agencies throughout the world. All HDR students in the School have, in addition to a primary supervisor, an expert supervisory panel that provides them with support and advice throughout their degree.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Critically analyse, synthesise and evaluate complex information in a specific area of the discipline relevant to their research;
- Formulate a research plan and undertake independent research to address specific research questions that make a substantial contribution to knowledge;
- Ensure that research is carried out with integrity and actively promote responsible conduct of research;
- Develop, adapt and implement research methodologies relevant to their research questions;
- Demonstrate expert technical and/or specialist skills relevant to their research focus;
- Communicate effectively to specialist and non-specialist audiences in both written and oral form;
- Demonstrate appropriate collegial and professional behaviour, and safe working practices as required by their specific research focus.

- ANU research candidates are required to meet a number of progress milestones including an initial Annual Plan, completion of Research Integrity Training, and other requirements. All milestones must be completed satisfactorily and are progression hurdles. (0) [LO null]
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload
One unit of enrolment is equivalent to 1 week, full-time and 2 weeks part-time. It is expected that Candidates will enrol in a minimum of 96 units and a maximum of 192 units across the duration of the program.
