This course examines the long history of Australia in the context of empire, nationhood, and the wider world, spanning the late eighteenth century to the twenty-first century. It explores how significant changes in Australian society have been connected to global histories and geographies, which continue to shape the nation. Topics for consideration include relations between settlers and Indigenous people; transformations in government; changes in information, knowledge and technology; the development of colonial nationalisms; the peopling of the settler empire; environmental impacts and challenges; suburbia and migration; and the representation of Australian history in museums.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the history of Australia in an international context;
  2. analyse key themes, and the causes and consequences of events, in Australia's history;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the development of historical scholarship about Australia, and account for different interpretations of Australian history;
  4. undertake historical research using primary and secondary sources, and produce written pieces demonstrating historical analysis and argument; and
  5. demonstrate in-depth understanding of at least two selected topics within the course.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 36 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 24 hours of seminars and 12 hours of workshop and workshop-like activities; and,

b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
